First WCHC Camp a Success

Lakewood, Calif.- Thirty two high school and college players took part in the first ever West Coast Hockey Conference Prospect Camp this past weekend at The Rinks-Lakewood.

The group of prospects looking to play college hockey for one of the six WCHC member schools were made up of players mostly from the Western States Hockey League (Junior A Tier II), CAHA Tier II, Anaheim Ducks High School League and the LA Kings High School League.

Camp began Saturday afternoon with a practice run by Cal State Northridge Head Coach JP Gale and Loyola Marymount Head Coach Joe Trotta. Afterwards a presentation on the ACHA, the WCHC and each of the six member schools was made to the players and their parents followed by a Q & A session.

Sunday morning a second practice was held by Long Beach State Head Coach Frank Mitrano and Cal State Fullerton Head Coach Tony Cortes. Lastly the prospects really got to showcase their skills during a scrimmage coached by San Diego State’s Phil Bateman and Chapman’s Sam Uisprapassorn. The game featured 17 minute stop-time periods with one ice cut in between the second and third periods just like a regulation CAHA or ADHSHL varsity game.
